Achieve your Business Goals - 6 steps

There was this little girl who told her mum she wanted to be a scientist. Her mum said that she needs to work for it. She needs to do well in school, go to a good university, and prove herself worthy in the science community. T

he little girl said “Well, that’s just three things,” and walked away.

We love how simple she looked at the situation!

In this blog post, we will be discussing steps to achieve your business goals.

We’re taking our cue from the little girl and saying that there are only really six steps to achieve your business goals.

Are they easy steps?

Not necessarily, but when were you ever intimidated by difficult?

It’s part of creating a positive mindset to achieve your goals – owning them and knowing that you can reach them.

Set goals

There’s more to goal-setting than merely telling your team to do their best so that your company will be successful.

The vagueness will translate to aimless efforts that seem futile and even counterproductive—moreover, your leadership anchors on your goal. Surprisingly, a lot of employees feel that management does not have a clear direction, which results in disengagement and demotivation.

Like in a computer game, a player is given a mission to carry out and accomplish. However, in a business sense, this mission is not an end, but a longtime driving force on which goals harbour on. For instance, your mission can be something like “to connect people…”.

Your goals should then be more specific and achievable, such as “to be the industry leader”. It would be best if you narrowed them down to more specific objectives, such as “to increase revenue by 10%” and “to capture 30% market share”. Such specific statements give clarity and motivation to teams.

Define milestones

As the word suggests, milestones are the stones on which your business will step, one after another, towards your goals. With your mission, goals, and objectives, gather your teams and have all hands contribute to defining milestones. It is crucial that you involve everyone, acknowledging their expertise and better foresight on some issues.

If the objective should be achieved within a year, your milestones should be spread across the whole year, either in monthly or quarterly items. Let’s break down the objective of capturing 30% of the market share into milestones. One milestone can be “ to get 1,000 Facebook followers at the end of the month”, and another “to have ten new clients for the first quarter”.

Note that milestones have deadlines and are qualitative and measurable.

Create and execute projects.

Now for the work. If you enlisted your teams in creating milestones to achieve your goals, you would have realistic targets that they can hit. Put your heads together for the best ideas, strategies, and collaborations that would lead you towards the achievement of your company goals.

With a set deadline for every milestone, it’s easier to decide on project scope and size. How can you get 1,000 followers by the end of the month? If you are a new player in the industry, you might have to place ads so that people will be more aware of your brand. Your marketing team can also work with the sales team in coming up with a promo that would attract new clients so you can meet your quota of 10 new ones for the first quarter.

This practice of creating and executing projects in a collaborative approach is an excellent way of keeping everybody driven. Moreover, it creates accountability and responsibility.

Track achievements

A great way to track achievements is to use online software that everybody can access and update. However, there are a lot of tools you can use to work around this. Even Facebook Messenger can be an excellent guerilla tool for updates and tracking, especially if you’re operating on a micro-scale, and it’s just you and a couple of other people. It eliminates the need for unnecessary meetings and keeps everybody focused on their tasks. Moreover, it helps boost morale and keep engagement high.

You don’t have to be the one to track accomplishments, though, and this is where delegation plays an important role. If you have in place great managers and lead people for your team projects, you only need to get a bird’s eye view of your company’s operations. However, you should be generous in giving praise. Don’t let an opportunity pass – give shout outs to teams and exceptional talent.

Another great advantage of tracking work accomplishments is that it documents your workflows and helps create a solid system moving forward.

Adjust accordingly

Since you’re tracking achievements, setbacks, and delays, you can take note of things that you can adjust as you go along. Although you and your team tried your best to craft realistic goals, you are not fail-proof. Learn from mistakes, and take note of blockades to eliminate.

Be flexible in your strategies and be gracious to your employees. It would help if you struck a balance between being a passionate entrepreneur and an understanding leader. Thus, you must keep an open and honest line of communication between you and your teams. You can then provide tools that would improve work performance, or maybe adjust objectives towards more realistic ones.

On the other side of the coin is the ability to surpass goals sooner than expected. If this happens, there’s no need to make higher objectives if you are already within a project timeline. Instead, you can set a higher benchmark for the next month or quarter.

Celebrate success

The last (but not the least) step to achieving your company’s goals is to celebrate when you meet them! A lot of leaders and business owners skip this vital step, which is a grave mistake. Imagine working so hard towards the goals of the company you are working for, hitting your targets, and then being told by your manager “Okay, here’s next month’s targets.” Not so encouraging!

Even as your teams work remotely, you can celebrate your success through video calls, emails, and shout-outs in your team chat. You can also send over hot meals to their place. The possibilities are endless; it only takes thoughtfulness.

Your team is your support system towards achieving your company goals. You need to ensure that they’re engaged, motivated and appreciated.

Achieving your business goals is not an impossible feat. However, it will take dedication, hard work, and a clear plan of action. If you follow the six steps we outlined above, you'll be well on your way to a successful future. So what are you waiting for? Get started today and see where your business takes you tomorrow!
